Eat Fresher Food By Growing Your Own Organic Garden

 

 

Have you ever tried to grow your own vegetables in a backyard garden? With the growing trend to become self-sustaining and lead a “greener” lifestyle, many people have found ways to provide their own vegetables, fruit and eggs, right from their own backyard efforts. Living off the land is not as difficult as you think, it just takes a little bit of knowledge, some space and a couple of seed packets to get started.

Learn the proper way to lay sod. Before laying sod, you have to make sure the soil is accurately prepared. Eradicate any weeds and work the soil until it is very fine. Next, you want to make the soil compacted by applying light but firm pressure. Make sure the soil creates a flat surface. Thoroughly moisten the soil. Then lay the sod in staggered rows so the joints are offset. Firm the sod down to form a flat, even surface, and fill in any gaps between the sod with a little soil. Sod must be watered every day for about two weeks, and then it will have rooted and be completely ready to be walked on.

When designing a garden area of your yard, a good place to start is with a tree or hedge as the anchor or structural foundation to your garden. Plant grasses and perennials around the taller centerpiece plant to add texture, color and flow. In time, these plants will fill out as they grow and look splendid against the taller trees or shrubs in the background.

Transfer your favorite plants inside so they survive the winter. Find out which plants will be able to thrive despite the transplanting and different indoor conditions. Dig carefully around their roots and place them into a pot.

A key element to having a great garden is to fence it in. In many areas the wildlife will consume the fruits and vegetables as soon as they sprout, yielding little or no harvest. A good fence will not only keep out the wildlife, but it will keep out the neighborhood children from playing ball and pets from digging.

When gardening, be sure to use proper posture. Don’t lift with your back, and try to bend at the knees instead of at the waist. Keep your back straight when bending over. This allows you to use stronger and more flexible muscle groups to lift, and also protects your spine.

Add some earthworms into your garden soil. Earthworms are great in tunneling and loosening up the soil, giving the roots of your plants plenty of air space. They help make soil that is rich in nutrients by breaking down dead plant materials. Earthworms are a much better solution for your garden than commercial fertilizers.
